Combo Cab

For the cabinet I decided to make one in the style of the Vox amplifiers. I don’t like the texture of the tolex Vox uses, so i used some other vanilla colored tolex and I also left out the decorative elements such als the golden strip and the piping.

I made a cabinet which houses just one 12″ speaker, because I mainly play in my living room and the used Red Fang is already loud enough (even a little bit too loud). However, I made the cabinet large enough to house two speakers. Just the baffle would have to be replaced.

The Eminence Red Fang was a cheaper alternative to the Celestion Blues, but the have become more expensive over the last few years.

The cab is made of 18mm birch plywood (Multiplex), the boards were glued and screwed.

Dimensions (W x H x D): 700 x 545 x 281mm

The Chassis rests on a board which is insertet into the cab like a shelf.

Plywood construction

Top and bottom with screwed and glued linings. The holes ar pre-drilled for the ventilation holes and cut-outs.

Side walls are glued and clamped:

Edge joint in detail. The chassis board will rest on the ledge in the middle.

Linigs for baffle and rear wall:

The edges are rounded with a router and a round-over bit:

Cut-out for the controls and ventilation openings are cut:

First test mounting of the chassis:

As the cab is semi open, the inside can be seen from behind. To enhance the looks, the inside is painted black as well as the baffle.

The bar in the middle of the baffle serves as beam blocker and is also present at old AC30s.

The speaker is mounted from the rear

Tolex

I used vanilla-colored tolex from Tube-Town (http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/product_info.php/info/p2359_Tolex-Tube-Town-Vanilla.html), and borwn Vox-styled grillcloth. (I have got it from an eBay store, which does not exist anymore. I know it is really hard to get and is quite expensive now)

To cover the amp with tolex can be a little tricky, but there are instructions on the internet. I used a german one, but I am sure there are a lot of instructions in english as well. 😉

First step: wrap the tolex around the cab:

A small patch on the inside corners:

The most difficult part are the rounded corners.I have made no pictures, since there are a lot of instructions on the net.

The grillcloth is attached with staples.

Completed cab:

Without chassis:

I attached a locking Neutrik jack on the mounting board of the cassis. The speaker connector is now on the inside of the cab and is secured against accidential disconnection.
